The wider West Hull area has many challenges in common with the rest of the city. However, the Newington and St. Andrews (NaSA) wards were identified two years ago as one of the most deprived areas in the City.

There are problems of poor quality housing, environmental decline, crime and anti-social behaviour, poor health, low educational achievement and a lack of community facilities.

The area was selected for special attention by Hull’s Urban Regeneration Company Citybuild. This work has now been linked with the Gateway Pathfinder programme in addition to Single Regeneration Budget, Neighbourhood Renewal, European funding and Sure Start programmes. Many local people have benefited from these initiatives already.

More detailed proposals are being prepared for 6 areas within NaSA. They are Albert Avenue, The Boulevard, Coltman Street, Dairycoates, Hawthorn Avenue and West Park, plus possible employment developments to the south of Hessle Road. In the wider West Hull ADF other areas of change identified so far include parts of Gipsyville, plus the Sculcoates and Newland Avenue areas.

Options looked at minimum, medium and higher levels of change. Priority areas identified so far include Orchard Park and North Bransholme with particular emphasis on housing and the environment.

Other particular issues for this area included public transport, the possibility of ‘hopper’ buses, access to the city centre and other parts of Hull, as well as improving shopping and leisure facilities and choice.

Building on employment opportunities on Sutton Fields and Kingswood, plus the possibility of creating a new business and industrial zone are among the more specific options being developed.

    East Hull

As a result of the research and consultation that has taken place to date the following areas of change have been identified as being the most in need of investment and represent some of the major issues for East Hull:

- The Ings (concentrating on the Caspon houses and the shops)
- Preston Road
- The New Bridge Road area and Summergangs
- Holderness Road
- Drypool
- Hedon Road
- The Eastern Estates (Bilton and Old Bilton Grange, Longhill and Greatfield)

Of these the main priority areas selected so far include The Ings Caspon houses and Preston Road NDC. In the Ings area the Caspon properties have specific challenges and in Preston Road there is an opportunity to build on the exiting ‘New Deal’ programme to support new build and refurbishment as well as remodelling some streets and supporting employment initiatives. In other parts of East Hull there are options to improve and concentrate shops on Holderness Road, encourage residential development on the River Hull and a major new business park in the Hedon Road area.
